The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a world leader in the study, appreciation and conservation of birds, is also an urban-greenery pusher. The idea behind the push is to create more urban greenery to support bird life. Founded in 1915, the Cornell Lab is a nonprofit unit of Cornell supported by 45,000 friends and members, 200,000 citizen-science participants and five million bird enthusiasts. The site's Urban Gardening for Birds page combines two of our favorite topics (ahem, urban gardening and birds) and includes a "Little Green Places" poster (pictured) depicting how urbanites can create bird-friendly oases with plants such as sunflowers, little blue stems, chokecherries and columbine. If you want to be a citizen-science participant, it's easy: Watch some birds and tell Cornell's researchers what they do. The organization's site also has Project: FeederWatch and Project: NestCams areas, a place to join and a place to search its Webby-winning All About Birds channel.
